Guidance on CPD – General Medical Council [UK] – 15 April 2013

“This GMC guidance – Continuing professional development: guidance for all doctors has been developed in co-operation with doctors, medical Royal Colleges, employers, patients and the public, and follows widespread public consultation earlier this year.

We hope doctors will use it to reflect on how their learning and development improves the quality of care they provide to patients and for the service in which they work.

The guidance describes:

how doctors should plan, carry out and evaluate their CPD activities
the importance of taking account of the needs of patients and of the healthcare team when doctors consider their own learning needs
how doctors should reflect on the Good Medical Practice domains when evaluating their CPD needs
the relationship between CPD and revalidation
the use of appraisal, job planning and personal development plans in managing CPD and how to record CPD activities
the responsibilities of others, such as employers and Colleges, in supporting doctors’ CPD.”

Posted on June 23, 2009. Filed under: Educ for Hlth Professions | Tags: , , , |

UK Health Professions Council launch online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) presentation [HPC is the regulatory body for Arts therapists, Biomedical scientists, Chiropodists/podiatrists, Clinical scientists, Dietitians, Occupational therapists, Operating department practitioners, Orthoptists, Paramedics, Physiotherapists, Prosthetists/orthotists, Radiographers, Speech and language therapists.  HPC requires registered practitioners to undertake CPD.]

“A new responsibility
Before 2005, you may have had to undertake CPD as part of your membership of your professional body, or by your employer, or another organisation. You may not have had to undertake CPD by any individual or organisation, but you may have been undertaking it anyway as part of your professional development. But before 2005, any CPD that you did was not linked to your registration with us.
Now that we have agreed our standards for CPD, it is an important part of your continuing registration. Our standards now mean that all health professionals must continue to develop their knowledge and skills while they are registered.”

CPD presentation launched online

The Health Professions Council (HPC) has now launched its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) presentation DVD online. The DVD which was originally launched on 1st May 2008 has been very successful and in high demand by registrants being audited for CPD.
The DVD was designed and produced to assist registrants with their understanding of the HPC requirements for CPD and prepare for the CPD audits by giving helpful tips. The DVD has received highly positive feedback from registrants which is why the HPC have now made this presentation available online.  …

The online CPD presentation has been timed to benefit those selected in the forthcoming CPD audits. As well as converting the content from DVD format to web, The HPC has also made every effort to ensure that it is as accessible as possible, both from a technical, and a disability point of view.
HPC’s CPD Communications Manager, Mark Potter said:
“With the DVD being so successful we thought the next natural progression would be to make it available to all our registrants online. This is a useful tool filled with helpful tips not only for our registrants but also for graduates preparing to join our Register.”
The presentation can be played from the existing CPD section of the HPC website. This can be found in the ‘registrants’ section, or by using the URL http://www.hpc-uk.org/cpd
